Dreaming About My New Garden

Dreaming about my new garden

The last two months have been exciting for me and my husband. We sold our house (and garden!) right before Christmas and then set out on a six week vacation. We are now back in Madison and renting a house across the street from our old one. The hunt for a new home has begun, and of course the yard is at least as important as the house.

We want to live on the east side of Madison near bike paths, cafés, stores, libraries and parks. But often living closer to town means settling for a smaller lot. This is not an option for us, since our urban farm dreams feature a huge garden, chickens, fruit trees, garden art and much more. (My not so secret dream is to have an amazing home demonstration garden where I teach classes and hold fun events!) So, we decided that a 7,000 square foot lot is our minimum and a 10,000 square foot lot is our ideal. The main reason we sold our old house before buying a new one was so we’d be in the position to be extremely picky and wait patiently for the right spot.

But, besides lot size, what exactly are we looking for? Today I drove by two houses that are up for sale in neighborhoods we like and when I got home I said to my husband, “I just don’t envision myself living in either of those houses.”

As we delve more seriously into the home search, I realize that I do have some very strong ideas about my new house and garden. And although I am excited to begin the design and planning phase, I thought I’d wait until we actually purchased a house before allowing myself to put my dreams down on paper. In my last session with my amazing life coach, Darcy, our conversation led her to suggest that I start envisioning and designing my dream garden right now. It was such a light bulb moment for me. I think I was afraid to really dive into the dreaming and designing out of fear – what if I don’t get the yard I am waiting for? But working with her these past two years, I have learned that making time to envision and dream about a goal helps crystallize it and make it real.

So, that’s what I am going to do. I have promised to carve out some time each week to have fun looking at photos and books and magazines and paying attention to what excites me. I will collect those images on my new Pinterest board. I will be slowly creating a map of where I am going and what it will look like when I get there. How exactly I am going to get there, I’m not sure yet, but that doesn’t matter in this dreaming phase!

In March, I’ll be launching the beta version of my new online class – Design + Install Your Own Garden. This first test session will be deeply discounted and only open to a small group of participants. It’s invite only, so get on the list here to be the first to find out when registration opens.
